Mr. Hume says this to Tiger Woods, “Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world”
First let me say that I applaud Mr. Hume for preaching! Tiger Woods claims to be a Buddhist and what Mr. Hume was speak about was the redemptive aspect of Christianity. Well I hope that’s what he was talking about. However being a Christian alone doe snot mean one does not sin.
In today’s Boston Globe there appeared this editorial dealing with what Mr. Hume had to say. I will quote just one line, “Christianity and other major religions provide solid ethical frameworks, but that’s not enough. Whether one is Christian, Muslim, or Zoroastrian, staying faithful to one’s spouse is a test of character, not faith.” I agree with the author of this editorial. It is not faith alone that keeps us on the right track it is our character, something that I think is lacking in this world today.

I think he gets it wrong here. The point you make is the clarification needed. Being a person of faith guides our character. To believe that our character is not informed by our faith is to misunderstand the transformative nature of being in the Church. Being faithful to one's wife is (or rather, should be) reliant on both.
Although I do not know much about the buddhist religion or its philosophies on good and bad.I do know that most religions when followed correctly and practiced faithfuly bring about peace and clearness to the soul,mind and body.
The christian religion does offer forgiveness but I'm sure the buddhist religion also understands that people are human and has such will need to right themselves periodicly.
It's nice to hear a news man not be afraid to speak about religion and voice his opinion.

The Boston Globe de-links faith and character, which is one step away from de-linking faith and behavior.
What I see in this is an overarching view that I have. What I see in the modern world view is that it starts with the old, anti-Catholic bias of the Protestant revolt, now combined with atheistism and dogmatic, absolutist relativism.
So…the Globe hits the Protestant note by de-linking faith from behavior and hits the atheistic, absolutist relativist note by attacking anyone who actually dares to believe ANYTHING other than the one permitted religion, which is to BELIEVE IN NOTHING.
